July Favorites

One of my favorite months of the year have come to an end and like most, I'm getting pretty anxious for the end of summer coming around but instead of focusing on that, I'm here to talk about my favorites this month:
I Just Hate Everything.com
I found this blog while looking up pictures of Glee's couple, Blaine and Kurt (don't ask why) and instantly fell in love. They mainly discuss television shows from "American Horror Story" to "Ravenswood" and are super hilarious, putting the post into three sections: why I hate it, why it's worth watching (in which they just make fun of it more), and a summary of the episode. I will also have to add that their reviews of "Glee" are the best I have ever read.

Ellie Jayden
I have been following this Irish beauty on her YouTube channel for a couple months now and have recently started reading her blog which I have to say is fantastic. She has an awesome and unique sense of style  and really meaningful things to say- she's definitely one of my new favorite bloggers.

♥Kingsfoil
I found out about this Pennsylvania based band when I bought tickets to see them, Rookie Of The Year, and Say We Can Fly at a show at the Knitting Factory (I wanted to see Braden Barry OK?) and since I was going to be sitting through one of their sets to see Say We Can Fly, it seemed like a good idea to at least check out some of their music. I had quite the obsession with their album, A Beating Heart Is A Bleeding Heart, for awhile and then went onto their other music which is so amazing. Needless to say, I'm over the moon to see them on Monday.

♥Kim Kardashion: Hollywood Life
This one was pretty obvious choice for a favorite. Though the game is mainly tapping things for money, stars, and level ups, there is something there that is addictive. I mean it first starts off with becoming an A lister. For me it was a need and I wouldn't stop until that happened but once you complete that, you need to be #1 which is a journey within itself. Throughout the game, you have to deal with your needy manager, Simon, go to photo shoots, appearances at clubs, walk the runway, and buy fancy homes all over the world. At the moment, my goal is to buy a purse in every color. As you can tell, this game is a good use of my time.

♥PrĂȘt A Manager
Over the past few weeks, I have been spending most my time at this sandwich shop (mainly the one on 27th and 7th) and have fallen in love with their meatball wraps. Pret is a chain throughout New York City (or at least thats only where I've seen it) and their whole thing is making fresh, healthy, food. I would have to admit that I've spent way more time than I should have there.

♥Felt Floppy Hats
I was on vacation at the beach this week and since I have dyed hair that I wanted to keep dark, I needed a hat to wear in the sun. At Forever21, they had a whole assortment of them for ten bucks and let me tell you, they go with about everything.

♥Orange Is The New Black
Though I've been watching the Netflix series for a couple months now (I finished season two last month), I just recently picked up the biography it was based on and fell in love. Though I'm not a huge fan of Piper on the show, I really do appreciate her in the novel and think it is extremely well written.

♥Laverne Cox
Speaking of Orange Is The New Black, I am absolutely in love with the actress of Sophia, Laverne Cox, and how amazing a role model she is. I especially love her interview on "CBS This Morning" where she corrected Gayle King's trans terminology. All in all, I think she is an extremely intelligent woman who I have been looking up to very much

Have a happy August!

Books I've Read On The Train

I have spent the last three weeks commuting back and forth from New Jersey to New York City and though the train ride is only about forty minutes, it has given quite a lot of time to read a wide array of books. So here it is; my reviews of books I've read on the train.

One Man Guy
Before I get into how fucking terrible this was, I guess I should describe the plot. Alek is just a average armenian kid who then has to go to summer school and meets Ethan. Ethan is about two years older than Alek and in a group called the D.Os (drop outs) who all talk like they're from the 90s and enjoy skating a lot and being the stereotypical "bad kids". Basically, for some unknown reason, Ethan takes an interest in Alek and forces him to go into New York City with him (Alek's parents don't allow him to go into the city alone) and Alek soon realizes that Ethan is gay. If the book isn't stupid enough, Alek figures out in ONE DAY that he is gay and just begins dating Ethan out of nowhere. Is it just me or was figuring out my sexuality a process not just a thought that hit me and then I decided I was gay? Like Alek literally says he never thought about being gay and then all of a sudden dates a boy. Anyways, the rest of the novel follows Alek and Ethan sneaking out a lot into New York City and is pretty uneventful (exempt for some AWESOME slurs towards lesbians because you know it's completely fine to support gay men and not women). The entire novel felt like it was written by a sixth grader and was extremely inaccurate towards the process of coming out. I am not saying that everyone is the same but I highly doubt that it's possible to just wake up and realize you're gay.

Firecracker
OK this was one of the funniest books I have ever read and it makes perfect sense since it's by the writer of "New Girl" (it's a guilty pleasure OK?) and SNL. The novel follows Astrid Krieger and how she was recently expelled from Bristol Academy, a prestigious prep school, and now has to attend public school for the first time in her life. I usually never actually laugh out loud at books but this actually got me giggling! The entire novel is funny, witty, and extremely hard to put down.

Beyond Magenta
This was one of the most gorgeous books I have read. Beyond Magenta is a collection of stories and photographs from transgender teens as they go through different phases of their lives. I have never really learned much about the whole trans community (aside from Tyler, the Rookie writer) and this really opened up my eyes to show that every single story was different. All in all, I would recommend this to anyone for it is absolutely wonderful.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)
I began watching "The Mindy Project" right after the Rookie post last year and have fallen head over heels in love with Mindy Kaling ever since so when she released a biography, I had to immediately buy it. The thing was that I never actually got the time to read it until I was spending eighty minutes in total everyday on public transportation. Mindy is just as hilarious, intelligent, and awesome on paper and I suggest anyone who even remotely is a fan of her's to read it.

How To: Space Buns (For Short Hair)

Space buns are my go to hairstyle for any bad hair day since they are super cute while still making my hair less gross and so here is my quick tutorial for these adorable buns for girls with short hair like me.
Step One
I wear my hair at a side part to the left but for this, I have to middle part my hair which looks pretty ridiculous as you can see. If you have bangs or a fringe like me, I would recommend separating them from the rest of your hair and tying them in a ponytail in front of your face.

Step Two
Now that your hair is parted, separate it into two even pigtails. This now depends on high you want them. Since my hair is pretty short, I go for about a medium sized length. I usually start with the left side first and bring it up and make it into a bun. Now, just like the first side, do the next one.

Step Three
I usually don't get the buns perfectly on the first try (they are most likely uneven) so I play around with height and how tight the buns are (I sometimes like them kind of loose and messy).
Step Four
This part really depends on how long your hair is but since this is meant especially for girls with short hair, I usually have to put a thin headband and a few clips in just to get that extra hair that wasn't long enough to go into the buns (my hair is on an angle) out of there.

And that's it! I would love to see pictures of your lovely faces and how the buns turned out so feel free to send them to How Fitting's email (howfittingblog1@gmail.com)!

A Discussion Involving G.B.F

Wow Ann yet another post about homosexuality? I realize this topic has been pretty dragged out but in my Sunday Diary this week, I discussed my issue with being the "gay friend" and why not kill two birds with one stone by writing a movie review and discussing the issue I promised to write more in depth about?
Starting off with the movie, I watched this teen comedy a few weeks ago and thought it was one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen because it's hard to deny that it isn't. The film follows a high school in which the gay best friend (otherwise known as GBF) is the new trendy thing and everyone is looking for one including the three girls (all with stupid names) running for homecoming queen. In the midst of this, Tanner and his group of "edgy alternative kids" (including Sadie from "Awkward") are basically just rolling their eyes at this because they're too good for anything all except for Brent who is constantly pressuring Tanner into coming out so he could become popular. The one thing that I continue not to understand is that Brent himself is gay yet just decides to live vicariously through Tanner. Anyways, a whole thing happens with a LGBT club made up of entirely straight people and Tanner is out of the closet. The three "queen bees", Fawcett, 'Shley, and Caprice, (I wasn't kidding about the dumb names) are now after him to try and turn him into the stereotypical GBF. A lot of shit happens in between but things actually get important about an hour and a half in when Tanner makes a speech after he won prom king. He explains that he doesn't want to get "gay married" or be a "gay friend" or have a "gay relationship" and he wants to be a friend, have a relationship, and possibly even get married. The entire movie ends pretty typically with all the cliques forming together and everyone living in peace without GBFs. You have to see the film to be able to understand how surreal and overdone it is but all and all, it's an important message.
I understand full well that being a gay female does have it's differences from being a gay man (what the film focuses on) but there are still many personal connections I made through watching GBF. For starters, it's in the name: Gay Best Friend. I came out about a month ago and when I informed some of my not so close friends that I still talk to regularly that I was a lesbian I got a lot of reactions such as
"wow now I have a lesbian friend!" which though I know they meant well, I wasn't too happy about. I tried to stress when I came out that I was the same exact person I was before and all of a sudden, this label made me feel like someone else. Like most human beings, I have had friends and they have all referred to me as their friend, Ann. This new title of "lesbian friend" made me feel a whole different way. I mean I don't refer to Emma (for example) as my straight friend so why would anyone feel the need to put my sexuality into a relationship title? Before I go on, yes I do realize that I am part of a minority but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy being thought of as a rarity. My sexuality has been a very important thing in my life (especially since I obsessed over it when I was questioning) but that doesn't judge my character or relationship title.
Onto the actual plot of the movie. After Tanner was outed, everyone wanted to be his friend though they barely even knew him. The film really tries to emphasize how ridiculous that is and I absolutely love how they did so. Since I came out, so many more people have been talking to me (with mainly questions and comments like "you're so brave!") and that's really strange for a person like myself. I have always been very introverted and to myself and now that I've let this little secret out, kids who I haven't talked to in years are all of a sudden taking an interest in speaking to me. I was even invited to a party this week because they wanted a lesbian there (which is insanely stupid might I add). This has also given me a weird relationship with guys. Boys are now telling me that I'm their "straight crush on a gay girl" and that I'm awesome (which is definitely not true) and though these are all nice things that I do appreciate it's still strange. I mean no guy (who isn't my friend) wanted to talk to me two months ago and now that I'm out, I'm considered "hot" (which I am positive is an invalid statement).
To sum it up, GBF is a really ridiculous movie with a pretty great message and I'd rather not be anyone's gay friend.

The L Word

The past few days have been pretty suffocating. I absolutely love FIT don't get me wrong but sometimes I tend to alienate myself. I don't know why but I feel so set apart from the girls in fashion entrepreneurship. It's not just because about all of them are about one million times prettier than me but the fact that I feel as though I need to be closed off from them as though anything I say will make them feel uncomfortable. For example, Thursday was the first time I ever felt uncomfortable and almost embarrassed about my sexuality in a group of people. I don't know why I felt so scared to just fucking admit that I in fact, wasn't attracted to the guys we were all gushing about cute boys but I just couldn't do it. And I realize that I don't need to drop the "L Bomb" every single second but I instead played along. Talked about the guys I would "kill to date" when in truth, I just felt worse and worse about myself. My sexuality has gotten me into some things that I really don't enjoy. I have soon realized that I don't want to be that "gay friend". I don't want to be thought of as anything but just a friend and I hate that some of the people I have been surrounding myself with are all of a sudden referring to me as their lesbian friend (this is a topic that needs a whole other post). Anyways, I guess what I'm feeling is stress. I am finally openly gay (something I have been wanting to be for years now) and all of a sudden, I'm realizing the real scary parts of it. Not to say that being a lesbian is something freaky but I do realize there are some struggles that come with it that no one straight will have to face. Such as yesterday when I got a rather strange message on my cover of "Kissing In Cars" asking me why I identified as bisexual (which I do not) and after explaining that I have zero attraction to boys, he proceeded to tell me what a minority I was (no shit) and how I couldn't possibly be gay. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm soon realizing that this is going to be something that will forever be a problem of mine but that won't stop me from be openly gay or pretending to be a straight girl as I have for the past two years.

Nash Grier "Gay Scandal" (No One Is Surprised)

Hello there again! Judging by the title, you must already know what this post is about (about every Internet human being has talked about it) but if you aren't familiar with our friend, Nash Grier, and his most recent scandal, I'm here to fill you guys in. Nash Grier became famous through his popular Vine account in which he dumps food on himself and other pointless shit but is best known for those big, blue eyes that quite a large amount of teenage girls adore. For those who have been reading this blog for awhile may recognize him from a post I did in January about his ever so lovely video about all his crazy expectation of girls (here). Anyways, a Vine of Nash's back from April was recently leaked after it had been deleted (as they say, the Internet is forever) of Nash claiming that HIV and AIDS are a gay only problem and then screaming "FAG!" rather obnoxiously into the camera. This video has gotten people from the gay community such as Tyler Oakley and Arielle Scarella talking about their opinions on the matter and has really gotten me thinking how I feel about this video.
I am openly gay and though I know that not every homosexual person agrees with me on this but I hate the word fag. I think it is disgusting and shouldn't be used. Ever. I don't care if you are joking. Fag is not a term of endearment and I refuse to be told otherwise. This being said, I don't care who you are, I will not tolerate this word so when Nash screamed it, I couldn't help but feel offended. In addition, as I said in my other post concerning Nash, he has quite a lot of power with so many fans. Most of them are young, impressionable, girls. So when he uses gross and harmful words like "fag", this makes his fans think it is OK to say it since some douche bag on the Internet said it was.
Since this Vine was leaked, Nash has apologized via Twitter and let me say it was rather underwhelming.

As you can see, there is a lot wrong with this apology (such as the misspelling of apolagize). Starting off, I just need to make a point towards the first sentence. When you say the word "fag", you are meaning to hurt someone. That is literally what it is; an anti gay slur that is used to make someone feel bad about themselves and who they love. Onto the "young and stupid" part, this happened literally four months ago. He is now only four months older. I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't call Ann in April much younger than Ann today so why is Nash now significantly older? Another thing I don't like about this is that this boy is sixteen. Not ten years old. I am fucking fourteen years old and even I know that it is NEVER OK to call someone a fag- especially to my millions of fans. Nash Grier is capable of living on his own yet he can't even determine what is wrong to call someone. Though this apology is flimsy, the thing I hate the most about it is that this happened four months ago and instead of apologizing for it then like he should have, he only actually said sorry when he was getting in trouble and losing fans. If he was really sorry about the vine, he would have said this in April. Obviously, Nash Grier is not upset about calling someone a fag, he is upset about his loss of fans.
Later on, a picture of Nash kissing a supposedly gay fan was posted to his snap chat story as if that makes any sense.
Can we just talk about how uncomfortable this guy looks? As if that isn't weird enough, in what way is this supposed to solve anything? This really shows a lot about Nash. He would rather do something stupid like kiss someone than actually use his words and proper actions for forgiveness.
Though this entire situation is extraordinarily upsetting, I think the worst part is that people continue to support Nash. I have even witnessed two girls at my school say that they are absolutely fine with him being a homophobe since he's hot and funny. There are so many people out there on the Internet who aren't misogynists against gay rights so why are we supporting this piece of shit? This being said, I do not forgive Nash and though I have heard a lot of points towards why what he did was OK, I stand by the obvious fact that it isn't OK to say fag.

Foxes: Glorious

Let me introduce you to my latest obsession: Foxes. I first about the british singer through the Fall Out Boy song, "Just One Yesterday" where she was featured (and looking ultra cute in "The Youngblood Chronicles" might I add) and wanted to find out more about her since her voice is so district and gorgeous. That is when I found out she sung one of my least favorite songs ever, "Clarity", which was a huge turn off. At the time also (this was last summer), she had only really come out with her single, "Youth", which in my opinion, doesn't nearly showcase all her talent. I hadn't really listened to much of her other music for awhile up until about two weeks ago when I discovered she had released a full length album called Glorious. I was pretty skeptical at first since none of the other music Foxes has done has been all that amazing but I decided to give it ago and I can most definitely say that she blew my expectations out of the water.
One of the best things about Glorious is that there is a great possibility of the songs being big hits on the Top 40 but they aren't mundane or anything you've ever heard before. Foxes' voice is just so weird and wonderful that anything she sings sounds different but even the actual lyrics and beat are distinct and unlike anything on the radio today. Just on first listen, I could easily tell which songs were going to be great hits to dance along to such as my favorite, "Let Go For Tonight", which is a super fun, upbeat, song that gets stuck in your head like an ear worm. I'm also a huge fan of the slower tracks on the album like "Night Glo" and "White Coats". Even the big single, "Holding Onto Heaven", is awesome and I could totally stand listening to it on the radio unlike her last summer song (cough cough "Clarity").
All in all, Glorious could only be described as glorious (see what I did there?) and I know this will be my soundtrack to the summer (funny enough, Fall Out Boy's Save Rock and Roll was my summer album last year) and I recommend 100% that you listen to it!
